BUREAU FOR PRIVATE POSTSECONDARY EDUCATION

On Jan. 1, 2010, the new Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE) came into existence. The California Private Postsecondary Education Act of 2009 (CPPEA), also known as AB 48, was signed by the Governor on Oct. 11, 2009, and went into effect on Jan. 1, 2010. The act replaces the Bureau for Private Postsecondary and Vocational Education (BPPVE) with the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE). The California Private Postsecondary Education Act of 2009 will apply to virtually all private postsecondary schools in California.

The Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE) is part of the Department of Consumer Affairs and is a consumer protection agency. BPPE exists to protect consumers and determines whether schools comply with consumer protection laws. Contractors State License Schools, an institution offering non-degree educational programs for total charges of two thousand five hundred dollars ($2,500) or less, operates under the provisions of the California Private Postsecondary Education Act of 2009 (CPPEA), Article 4 Section 94874(f) as an exempt institution. CSLS will apply for verification of exemption from the Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE) pursuant to its regulations and Article 4 Section 94874(f) of the CPPEA of 2009 when the process for verifying exemption is made public by the BPPE as required by Article 4 Section 94874.7. The act is administered by the Department of Consumer Affairs, Bureau for Private Postsecondary Education (BPPE), P.O. Box 980818, West Sacramento, CA 95798-0818.
